FEBRUARY 2002 | “The laws of God, the Laws of Man, and the Catholic Church’s Toughest Confession.” Dick Gordon hosts Boston’s NPR Radio program, “The Connection,” a few days after Cardinal Law releases a list of 70 names of priests alleged to have committed child sex abuse. Guests include Thomas Groome, a laicized priest and professor of Theology at Boston College; Jason Berry, a New Orleans journalist who gives the history of Thomas Doyle’s 1985 report to bishops on clergy abuse; Roderick MacLeish, a Boston attorney who discusses the legal liability of Cardinal Law, and the impact of Massachusetts’ weak laws on the possibility of prosecution of Law and his bishops. Boston area clergy abuse survivor Bill Gately phone in to talk about the ways in which he has come to terms with both his abuse experience, and with his abuser.

March 26, 2001 The David Brudnoy Show | Boston Phoenix reporter Kristen Lombardi joins host David Brudnoy for a discussion of her investigation into the Fr. John Geoghan case, and the complicity of Cardinal Law, which has just been published in the weekly Phoenix newspaper.

JUNE 2000 | This is Phil Saviano’s first live interview with Boston’s celebrated talk radio host David Brudnoy. Up for discussion was the recent arrest of a parish youth minister, charged with sexually molesting many young boys in the rectory of a parish church in Middleton. One focus of the broadcast was Phil’s attempt to explain, and David’s attempt to understand, why it is that kids don’t often tell when they are being sexually abused. The 29-year-old perpetrator, Christopher Reardon, later pleaded guilty to sex abuse crimes involving 24 boys, and was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison.
1998 | WBZ Radio Boston – Pedophile Priest John Geoghan Is Defrocked By Vatican
JUNE 1998 | WBZ RADIO BOSTON – Steve Leveille moderates a discussion about clergy sex abuse in the Boston Archdiocese, the day after the notorious priest John Geoghan is defrocked by the Vatican. This is the second half of the program, with call-ins from listeners who have a range of reactions to victims coming forward with their claims against Geoghan. The earlier part of the program, which was not recorded, (unfortunately), featured SNAP’s Barbara Blaine and Phil Saviano.

September 1997 | WTAG AM radio discussion from Worcester, MA features Phil Saviano, founder that year of the New England Chapter of SNAP, Dave Lewcon, victim of a Worcester Diocese priest Thomas Teczar and Mark Montigny, the state senator who was sponsoring new legislation to make members of the clergy mandated reporters of child abuse. This program is a good example of the fact that the concept of Catholic bishops protecting and moving child-abusing priests from church to church, diocese to diocese, and state to state was discussed and reported on years before the issue was blown wide open by the 2002 Boston Globe Spotlight report. The host references a 1997 investigative report on the history of Fr. David Holley, by the Dallas Morning News.
